6. As the modern, safe, foam landing pads replaced the traditional sawdust pits,
high jumpers felt free to experiment with unusual techniques, which in the
past would have been considered dangerous.
In 1968, Dick Fosbury came out of nowhere to win a gold medal,
sailing upside-down over the crossbar in a technique soon dubbed the
"Fosbury Flop." Fosbury's innovation was widely copied,
and has now completely replaced all other techniques at the top
of the sport. The reason is simple: the flop allows the lowest center of gravity
